The aim of this book is to tell something of the cultural achievements of the Estonian nation.
The reader will find an essay on Estonia's chequered past, and another outlining her little-known geography. An article on archaeology carries the story back several thousand years. Since a language reflects in a great measure the spirit of a nation, we offer two commentaries on the subject. One deals with the structure of Estonian, which is closely related to the Finnish language. The other shows, how the Estonian language became a worthy medium of modern culture.
There are chapters on literature and Estonia's rich folklore, the plastic arts, the theatre and the press. Special attention is devoted to music and the proud tradition of national singing festivals, to the important role of the church, to the universities, schools, educational institutions for adults, and youth movements.
