Raun (Central Eurasian studies, Indiana U.) surveys Estonia's political history, economy, social and demographic developments, and cultural life from the prehistoric era to the present, with attention paid to historiography and different interpretation of significant issues. Estonian history is also placed in the context of northern and eastern Europe.

The original edition was published in 1987; the second, in 1991, and this is an updated version of that second edition.
