Through their over century-long history, Estonian song festivals have changed from one-time singing societies' undertakings into major state and nationwide festivities. In Soviet years the song festival traditions have widened in scale: besides all-Estonian song festivals, schoolchildren's and student's song festivals are arranged in our republic; folk arts shows have grown into folk dance festivals; and the festival programmes feature performances by guest choirs and dance ensembles from fraternal Soviet republics and foreign countries.
