Landscapes of Identity
Estonian Art 1700–1945. The 3rd-floor permanent exhibition of the Kumu Art Museum
Opened in 2021, the permanent exhibition on the 3rd floor of the Kumu Art Museum, «Landscapes of Identity» presents a panorama of Estonian art through the country\'s multi-ethnic history. This is a rich heritage combinating Estonian, Baltic German and Russian traditions. The focus is on the role of art in society and in shaping the self-image of communities in this period.
The exhibition explores the emergence and evolution of various symbols that have continued to be employed throughout the centuries - from works by Baltic German and Russian Imperial artists to those in the interwar Republic of Estonia and the Soviet period - and that have played an important part in identity construction.
