The present technological level demands from school leavers knowledge of the latest industrial and scientific trends, creative attitude to work, initiative and readiness to improve one's skills constantly. There can be seen a worldwide tendency to improve educational standards and search for better ways of preparing children for adult life. Precisely these ends are kept in view in the Guidelines of the Reform of General Education and Vocational Training adopted by the Soviet government in April 1984. Conditioned by the country's general economic, social and cultural development, this important document will determine the future of the educational system for many years to come. The authors of the booklet try to give the reader some idea of what is being done in Estonia schools in the way of implementing the reform.
