It is easy to portray Tartu - both in pictures and in words. And it is difficult to portray Tartu. The Tartu of this book contains much that is typical of the city but is also just a starting point for finding out more. «Our Tartu» is a chronicle and a current picture of an open city: of residents' Tartu, of visitors' Tartu. It will appear differently to every person, and at the same time retain a common core that is perceptible to all. All the same, it remains ultimately inexplicable, visually elusive; so that it might provide more reasons to live here, more reasons to return.
