Phonetics has long ceased to be a purely linguistic discipline. The phonetic sciences cover a wide range of topics of speech communication including speech production, acoustics and perception, speech signal processing, synthesis and automatic recognition, logopedics, phoniatrics and aids for the handicapped, speech acquisition and teaching, singing and, as its largest field, linguistic aspects of speech research. More than 1000 papers reflecting all these topics were submitted to the 11th ICPhS from 50 countries all over the world. The Technical Programme Committee devoted a great deal of time to the selection of as many valuable papers as possible.
