The present brief survey of the modern family is, in the main, based on sociological studies; it offers a more or less detailed account of family relations, as well as of the economic and child-rearing functions of the family, while the function of securing the continuity of society is left to the background as this is, first and foremost, a global problem belonging to the sphere of demography; it will only be touched upon when discussing family size and structure.
