The Middle East is more than a battleground for power and influence. It is also an arena for ideological contest. The birthplace of three great religions, the Middle East today is the testing area for socialist thought, modernisation and nationalism. In this context it has been unwillingly engulfed in the struggle between the capitalist West and the communist East. Geopolitical consideration dictate a power struggle which is also fought within a framework of ideological competition. The latter dimension has tended to be put in second place by analysts viewing the struggle: this study corrects the imbalance.
