This book sets itself the aim to give an account of early Estonian history on the basis of archaeological evidence. Compared with regions farther in the south, human habitation in Estonia is of a much more recent origin - her territory was freed from continental ice only some 11 000 years ago. Nevertheless, Estonian prehistory covers a fairly long period, taking us from the first known Mesolithic settlement in about 7500 BC to the Germanic and Danish conquest and the appearance of written records at the beginning of the 13th century. As for Estonian archaeologists, they help to shed light on even much more recent centuries. The authors, both archaeologists of established renown at the Institute of History of the Estonian SSR Academy of Sciences, have a formidable stock of field experience, but they are certainly also experts in making their subject up into an exciting book.
