Beneath the waters of the Baltic lies a hidden wealth of culture. Thousands of years of human activity along coastlines and waterways have left behind many remains, including shipwrecks, flooded Stone Age settlements, harbours, navigation blockages and much more. Through them, we gain a better understanding of how people lived on and near the sea in various eras.
Archaeology under water is a relatively young field of scientific inquiry. Researches from all the countries around the Baltic here provide an introduction to underwater archaeology in their respective regions.
The book also includes a general introduction to the field of underwater archaeology, the discipline's tools and methods of inquiry, the biological and geological conditions in the Baltic, and underwater cultural preservation.
