Konverents kasvas välja Stockholmi ülikooli Balti uuringute ajalooprojektist «Riik, kirik, ühiskond», mille peamine eesmärk oli Rootsi suurvõimu aegse poliitika võrdlev uurimine emamaal ja Läänemereprovintsides- Eesti-, Liivi- ja Ingerimaal.
